The new Cyber Health Analysis Report Tool (CHART) by Bureua Veritas

Bureau Veritas (BV) is a world leader specialised in testing, inspection and certification in variety of sectors, including marine and offshore. The new Cyber Health Analysis Report Tool (CHART) by BV was developed with the aim to help shipowners get a better understanding on their digital architecture of their ships and identify vulnerabilities that results in potential cyber threats. This is helpful for shipowners to evaluate and increase the cyber resilience of their vessels, which is a core priority as connected systems have become a common feature of modern ships.

The marine industry has become increasingly reliant on digital technologies and connected systems in recent years. Recent incidents have demonstrated that cyber-attacks can have severe consequences, including disrupting of operations, causing safety hazards, and leading to financial losses. The maritime industry has recognized the need for cybersecurity measures and has taken steps to improve its security posture.

CHART by BV provides a comprehensive audit on a vessel by evaluating its equipment, networks, security mechanisms, and interconnections to ensure that the systems in place are fully known to the owner. The components will also be validated with all cybersecurity compliance from regulations such as IACS and IMO. The "Cybersecurity Health Check Report" provided will include information and recommended mitigation measures.

The new tool can validate a ship’s compliance with upcoming IACS’ Cyber Resilience Unified Requirements UR E26, which will require the implementation of stringent cybersecurity protections and will be mandatory from 1 January 2024. Auditing networks and equipment can verify adherence to the standards, and if not, establish a plan for how to reach compliance.
