Cyber attackers are using new extortion scam to threaten and damage company’s reputation and data.
An active extortion scam is going around, targeting potential website owners and admins worldwide to gain privileged access. The scam claims to the victim that their servers have been hacked and are raising a demand of $2,500 to not leak confidential data. The email is non-targeted that is send across various verticals, including personal bloggers, government agencies, and large corporations.
The spam email warns the victim that hackers have leak stolen data, will leak data, and damage their reputation if the targets don’t make a payment of $2,500. With the widespread of the spam message, various people have reported getting such message and seek the right way.
The threat actors are using Bitcoin to facilitate the payment process. People have reported that some people have used the provided link and paid the extortion demand. People are advised to not fall for these scams, even though the content of the email is scary enough to make users think otherwise. When receiving a Bitcoin embedded in an email address, users can check the provided link with a popular database that can identify cryptocurrencies involved with fraudsters actively.
When more people can identify a scam and not fall for the demands of the threat actor, the act of extortion through scam email can decline.
